THE PSNI has launched an investigation into a possible needle spiking in Omagh on Saturday night.
Police say that they received a report from a woman who believed she may have been the victim of the crime, of which incidents have dramatically increased across the North in recent months.
A PSNI spokesperson stated, “Police in Omagh received a report of a woman who believed she may have been the victim of a needle spiking on Saturday evening (November 5).
“A detailed investigation into this incident is underway, including a review of CCTV footage.
“The police would urge anyone who thinks they have been spiked to contact police as soon as possible so that they can maximise all investigative opportunities.”
The PSNI also said they are investigating over 120 spiking incidents this year.
Victim Support NI, which helps people who have been victims of crimes, said anyone who believes they may have been spiked should seek assistance immediately.
A spokesperson said, “We are concerned to hear of another potential incident of spiking with a needle in our local community. We know that crimes like this can be terrifying for the individual victims as well as generating a great amount of fear and uncertainty among those who just want to enjoy a night out in safety.
“These incidents also disproportionately affect women, and highlight the urgent need for the NI Executive to bring forward a violence against women strategy at the earliest opportunity.
“We urge all pubs and nightclubs to ensure that appropriate safety measures are in place and that their staff remain alert and are trained on how to respond appropriately to victims of violence.”
They added, “Our advice would be for anyone who thinks they have been spiked, either with a needle, or by drugs or excess alcohol being put in a drink, to seek assistance as soon as possible. If you are feeling unwell, you should disclose this to someone you trust, then go to your nearest Emergency Department. If you want to report the incident to police, you can do so by dialling 101. And if you are unsure about whether you wish to report, but want support and a listening ear, our Victim Support NI services are available to every victim of crime, regardless of whether you wish to report to the PSNI. Our contact details and ways to get in touch can be found on our website at www.victimsupport.com.”
