RATE-PAYERS in the Mid-Tyrone area were responsible for a quarter of all missed bin collections across the district during the past year, new figures from Fermanagh and Omagh District Council have revealed.
The issue of missed bins – particularly food waste caddies – has been a regular concern for many households.
According to the council’s newly released figures, 25 per-cent of missed collections occurred in Mid-Tyrone, followed by 14 per-cent in West Tyrone.
Just two per-cent were recorded in the Omagh town electoral area.
In total, the council’s environment and place directorate received 102 complaints in the 2024-2025 financial year.
Of these, 84 were related to refuse collection – covering missed collections, bad weather disruption, and damage to household bins.
Director of environment and place, John Mews, confirmed that all complaints had been resolved following engagement with council officers.
“There has been no discernible increase in the level of complaints in 2024-2025 compared to the same period in 2023-24,” he said.
“Over the last 12 months, most complaints related to the non-collection of food waste caddies, which are currently deployed to approximately 54 per cent of households across the district.”
At last week’s environmental services committee meeting, residents were encouraged to continue placing bins out on their designated collection days.
Mr Mews added that the council is assessing bin lorries for the installation of in-cab technology, which would eventually allow text alerts to be sent to residents in real-time if their bin is not collected.
