River walkway will finally be repaired after four years

OVER four years after it was damaged by suspected high water levels, the river walkway at Sion Mills is to be finally repaired.

The walkway which runs along the River Mourne – a section of which collapsed into the river in June 2016 – will soon be the focus of remedial work by Derry City and Strabane District Council, according to local councillor, Steven Edwards.

One section of the ‘weir walk’ along the Mourne, around 20 feet in length, has been perceived as dangerous for walkers and has been surrounded by a metal fence for the past four years.

This week the SDLP councillor welcomed confirmation that the repairs will take place.

Following correspondence from officials at council, the Derg representative also says he is confident further works will be carried out in the near future.

Cllr Edwards explained, “I welcome this work on the river walkway in Sion Mills which has been long overdue and has faced a decade or more of neglect.

“Since becoming a councillor, many people have raised concern about the lack of outdoor green space. This walkway is part of only a handful across this district therefore it’s important that it’s invested in and maintained properly.

“I’ve lobbied council on this issue and I am delighted council are now taking action which will see the river walkway restored after sustaining damage during flooding.

“Moving forward, I will continue to push for more investment for the Sion Mills area and funding to be spent on upgrading paths, bridges and public facilities.

“I am positive that, in the coming weeks, there will be another announcement that secures a positive future for the area. This area remains a key priority for the SDLP as we know what it means to our local community.”
