Rouskey garden will ‘put a little sunshine in your life’

A FAMILY from Rouskey is inviting people to put a little sunshine into their lives, by picking up some flowers as part of a new charity project.

The Ward family, Charlie and Bernie, have planted a plot of sunflowers behind their home near St Mary’s Church and now that their efforts are coming to fruition, they decided to offer locals the chance to pick up a bunch and donate some funds to a good cause.

Open to the public from today (Thursday) onwards, the new sunflower garden is situated at the bottom of Dunne’s Lane, with a sign at the road pointing the way.

“We’re asking people to come and pick and then make a donation,” Bernie explained this week.

“We want to donate whatever money is raised to carers in the local community, those people who were neglected during covid, in the difficult circumstances they had to work in.”

Bernie says too that people can also nominate local carers they believe should benefit from some extra funds.

She continued, “People who work as carers would benefit by receiving a token of appreciation.

“We did ask people to nominate carers as well and we thought that might be the fairest way…”

She added, “But as well as raising some money, it’s something that children will enjoy too… that’s part of whole joy of picking sunflowers.”

Bernie finished with a short poem she wrote…

“Watch the sunflowers in the morning, facing east.
“Watch the sunflowers turning around all day.
“Watch the sunflowers get the last rays of sun in the west and back to the east.
“Watch the sunflowers in hope, like us, of a bright and sunny day tomorrow.”
