Social distancing to be scrapped in bars and nightclubs

LEGAL requirements for social distancing in hospitality venues are to be scrapped at the end of the month, according to reports.

The BBC has reported that other mitigations, such as checking customers vaccine status, is recommended but not required by law.

Executive ministers are meeting this afternoon, and an official announcement is expected later this evening.

It is understood the rules will be changing on October 31, which could pave the way for nightclubs to reopen for the first time since the first lockdown in March 2020.

Industry figures raised fears that the restrictions continued to place pressure on some businesses, especially with the furlough scheme ending earlier this month. 

Currently venues must adhere to one-metre social distancing; meaning venues with dance floors have remained restricted.

The move follows last month’s announcement that venues, such as cinemas and theatres would no longer need to enforce the one-metre rule.
