A ‘PEOPLE-FRIENDLY’ Omagh town centre could see the pedestrianisation of some of the current main routes for traffic.
High Street from Scarffe’s Entry to the Courthouse is one of the town centre areas considered as being exclusively for pedestrians and cyclists.
It is hoped that this move – which would see the streets only open for deliveries between 8am and 10am – will create what is described in the document as a ‘more attractive and pedestrian/cycle-friendly place’.
In addition, a number of environmental schemes are also being considered.
These include re-paving to enable greater accessibility, tree-planting and a rain-garden, the reduction of clutter, and enhanced street furniture, such as seats and bins, outdoor retail, and the provision of an entertainment platform.
Pedestrians would also be prioritsied at Drumragh Avenue, Bridge Street and the Mountjoy Road.
According to the draft plan, this would be linked to a wider traffic management plan, and the approach then being replicated at the junction of Market Street, Campsie, and the Drumragh Avenue junction.
There are also proposals for the enhancement of the Oasis Plaza, including improved lighting, café and restaurant space, and more extensive planting of riverside trees.
