SDLP West Tyrone MLA Daniel McCrossan, has welcomed his party colleague Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon’s delivery of traffic weight restrictions in Clady.
Ms Mallon visited the area to meet local residents and share the news.
The proposed order will prohibit vehicles exceeding 7.5 tonnes maximum gross weight from using the B85 Urney Road, Clady from its junction with the B165 Bellspark Road to its junction with the U0204 Urney Road.
HGVs making local deliveries or travelling to and from local businesses will be exempt from the restriction.
Mr McCrossan said, “This issue has been rumbling on for 30 years and has caused a large amount of problems for both residents and local businesses. We have campaigned long and hard for action on this issue and it has consistently fallen on deaf ears.
“When the SDLP’s Nichola Mallon became Infrastructure Minister we approached her and after hearing our pleas she has taken the action required to resolve this issue and deliver for local people. She was warmly greeted by people in Clady today who are delighted this issue will now be resolved once and for all.”
SDLP Derg councillor Steven Edwards who invited the Minister, said he was happy the Minister got the chance to hear from resident’s who have been ‘disturbed by noise’ because of this ongoing problem.
Councillor Edwards said, “I invited Minister Mallon to Clady this month to see first-hand the impact HGV’s are having in the village. I was happy that she was able to hear from residents living on the Main Street and learn about the impact this is having on people’s lives.
“Minister Mallon heard how residents have had to move into the back rooms of their homes, how they’ve been disturbed by noise and how their evenings have been continually disrupted. I am delighted that she has followed her visit with action by committing to introduce a ban on HGV’s in the village.”
