STRABANE bade farewell to one of its most cherished educators yesterday (Thursday), as former St Mary’s principal, Eleanor Devine (pictured) was laid to rest.
Described as a person who ‘forged strong friendships’ across Strabane throughout her career and sporting life, Ms Devine passed away on Sunday. Celebrating Requiem Mass yesterday at St Mary’s of Melmount, Fr Malachy Gallagher described Ms Devine as a quiet and calm woman who touched the lives of so many.
Fr Gallagher said, “Eleanor forged so many strong friendships across Strabane and in this parish of Melmount. She grew up in the town and taught (here) affecting so many people’s lives.”
The priest continued, “She was a quiet and calm person who always kept her cool. She lived with her sister Maureen who passed away in 2022 and we pray that they are united again. She was an excellent golfer and made many friends at Newtownstewart Golf Club where she was Lady Captain.”
Fr Gallagher added, “Eleanor became principal at St Mary’s Primary School in 1972 and was the principal who helped transition the staff in to the current building the school is in; she even moved some of the equipment in her own car. She was an avid reader and loved poetry and after retiring joined a society that helped promote literature in schools.
“Eleanor greatly contributed to our local community and helped so many young people. She will be greatly remembered by all who knew her.”
Following Requiem Mass yesterday, Ms Devine’s remains were interred in the adjoining cemetery.
