CCTV has been put in place at Greenhill Cemetery in Omagh after a spate of vandalism to the graves.
Recently, there has been a series of incidents of vandalism where items were stolen and graves were damaged.
Following the incidents, CCTV has been installed at the cemetery and council officers are continuing to liaise with the PSNI in relation to the incidents which have occurred.
Speaking at a recent council meeting, Cllr Barry McElduff welcomed the installation of CCTV at the cemetery and said he had been liaising with families who were impacted by the vandalism.
Cllr McElduff said, “This is obviously a very sensitive issue – the theft of flowers and potted plants and previously vandalism to family graves within the cemetery. This has happened over a period of time. I wrote to the senior council officer on June 20 and I got a good answer back, and CCTV was installed.
“I had asked for confidence building measures for the families who were not shouting loud about these incidents but were hurt by the actions and vandalism. Other questions I asked were about the identification of the person committing the acts but at the minute, I welcome the installation of CCTV in the area and continual monitoring of the cemetery,” said Cllr McElduff.
Cllr Josephine Deehan added that this is something which has given rise for concern.
She said, “I thank the council for their speedy attention to this matter and also the PSNI for their vigilance in the area too.”
