Locals in the medals at Gortin Glen event

AFTER a lengthy hiatus stretching into decades, competitive racing finally returned to the Gortin Glens at the weekend when the final round of the Vitus First Tracks Enduro Cup took place on the impressive new trails in the forest park.

On Saturday and Sunday a huge number of racers came from near and far to tackle the testing trails, but it seemed local knowledge went a long way with a host of victories for those from closer to the Glens.

Omagh’s Gary Donaldson, a member of Team Caldwell Cycles but racing for the Vitus First Tracks team, posted the fastest time overall on Saturday to claim victory in the senior men’s race from his friend, another Caldwell Cycles man, Angus Fyffe, with Gortin Mountainbike Club’s Mark Maguire third. Dromore’s Darnell Moore just missed out on the medals in fourth, with Mattheus Braian Meitzke fifth.

Another local winner was crowned in the Master A Men’s race for those aged 30-34 years, with Beragh’s Marc Potts obliterating the field.
