TWO of the most talented attackers currently on the Tyrone GAA scene are all set to make their mark in impressive fashion as the county’s successful U-20 campaign reaches its climax with the All-Ireland decider against Louth on Wednesday night.
Loughmacrory duo Eoin McElholm and Ruairi McCullagh have spearheaded the Red Hands attack throughout this season. Their almost telepathic understanding reflects the huge progress that has been made by so many of the St Teresa’s players at club and county level in recent years.
Add in the presence of Eoin Donaghy as well and the picture of the club’s growing representation on Tyrone teams at every level becomes clear.
It is, of course, a story which seems certain to have many twists and turns ahead. But the one thing for certain is that the twin-forwards are destined to enjoy many more big days ahead for club and county in the years to come.
All the focus for them is centred for now on the challenge posed by the Wee county at the Athletic Grounds. But, this is also a time to reflect for many to reflect on the impact that they are making, and the prospect of their exciting talents continuing to develop as they bid to reach their potential.
Ruairi McCullagh’s scoring exploits are being enjoyed by many from Loughmacrory who have travelled to support the club’s three-strong contingent on the U-20s. He is understandably determined to make the most of this latest opportunity to add to their growing list of honours.
“This is a great time for the Loughmacrory club.
“There’s myself, Eoin McElholm and Eoin Donaghy all on the panel and the support that we’ve been getting from everyone in the club has been amazing and really appreciated,” he said.
“All three of us were on the pitch at on stage in the All-Ireland semi-final, which is really good for the club. We all played alright and I suppose it’s due to the work that has been done within Loughmacrory at coaching over the years.
“We’ve a great set-up in the club now. There’s really good coaches, right the way from U-6 to senior level. They’ve been pushing and driving us forward, and the one thing is that we’ve always got good support from the club going to these matches.”
The conclusion of each Tyrone U-20 game usually features a group photo of the Loughmacrory people in attendance. It’s a gesture of the club’s pride in the players making their way on this Tyrone U-20 team, or whatever other side features players.
“We’re happy to have got the benefits from the effort that so many have made in the club. The whole community is really looking forward to the All-Ireland Final, and at least the couple of weeks since the semi-final has helped us prepare properly,” he added.
“It’s all about getting the preparations right and that’s what has been done.
“It’s about going out now, doing your best and hoping that things go according to plan in the final.”
