Omagh man wins British Rallycross Championship

MARK Donnelly was as ‘surprised’ as anyone when Motorsport UK announced him as the winner of the 2020 British Rallycross Championship 5 Nations Trophy presented by Cooper Tires.

The announcement by the sport’s governing body was a nice fillip for Donnelly, who had to postpone his July wedding to Charly Doran for 12 months due to the global Coronavirus pandemic.

The Omagh man only made his rallycross debut in 2019 before deciding to try his hand behind the wheel of a 650bhp Citroen DS3 for the 2020 campaign, which was also majorly impacted upon by Covid-19.

Originally, the Five Nations Trophy was to be contested at rounds in Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales and Belgium, but due to travel restrictions only three events were possible and all were held at Lydden Hill, which coincidentally is owned by Mark’s soon to be father-in-law, Pat Doran, while future brother-in-law, Liam, supplied his vehicle.

Despite any pressure from his extended family, Donnelly delivered from the off.
