OVER the last four months we have experienced the non-existence of sporting activities throughout the Island of Ireland and worldwide, with many sporting events cancelled or postponed which saw many
athletes’ racing plans left in tatters.
Nevertheless, Letterkenny AC organised, under strict guidelines and regulations, the first competitive road racie in Donegal on Sunday when they hosted the Newmills 10K, sponsored by Divers Hyundai.
The race itself was capped at 120 participants with a total of 107 athletes toeing the social distanced start line.
Lifford Strabane AC’s leading senior lady Claire McGuigan, coached Michael McKinney, continued her excellent racing form from before lockdown by running a personal best time of 36 minutes exactly, winning the ladies race convincingly, finishing over two minutes ahead of her nearest rival.
McGuigan had a fantastic race on what was a very tough course, having race goers working hard from the 4K mark on an undulating course, to take an impressive 17 seconds off her previous best 10K time.
