Prodigal son Ferry makes return trip

PRODIGAL son Sean Ferry has returned to Strabane Athletic.

Ferry, who had moved from Strabane to Championship neighbours Dergview back in January, has become new manager Liam McMenamin’s fourth new signing since taking over from Eamon Curry. The striker said the decision to return was due to work committments and a desire to help his hometown club to make progress in the wake of confirmation that facilities at Melvin are to be upgraded by erecting a new stand.

“At Dergview there was good competition for places with me, Sean McCarron and Paul Smith and I really enjoyed my time there,” he said.

“Ivan (Sproule) told me he wanted me to stay but playing for Strabane suits me best right now. Playing in the Championship it was hard to get shifts sorted for work, you had to fully commit. I really enjoyed playing in the Championship, Ivan was 100% and you were playing top teams every week.

“But I’m a Strabane man and the aim this year is to try and win the Intermediate League and to progress once the stand is sorted out.

“The club have been waiting for years to move up and they’ll be going gung-ho this season. Liam McMenamin and Marty Gormley are friends of mine so I had to take that into consideration as well. There is a real buzz around town since those boys took over and there is a feeling that we can give it a real good push this season.

“They are assembling a good wee squad and I’d say we can give the league a good rattle, although Newbuildings have signed well by recruiting Tommy Wray and Tommy McBride and will provide a real challenge if last season is anything to go by.”
