Request to have Irish street sign in main area of Stewartstown

THERE are proposals for more Irish language street signs in a number of areas in Tyrone.

The momentum for Irish-English dual-language street signage is still growing in Mid Ulster District Council, with more requests for such signage having been received from a number of areas throughout the district.

Requests have been received from Moneyhaw Road, Drummullan; Derrygonigan Road, Cookstown; Killybearn Road, Cookstown; Killybearn Lane, Cookstown; Drumgarrell Road, Cookstown; Roanville Terrace, Coalisland; The Square, Stewartstown.

The occupiers signing the requests in these various areas have been confirmed as residents of their particular streets, which has been evidenced by their listing on the current electoral register.

Meanwhile, dual-language surveys have recently ended at Lisnastrane Road, Coalisland, West Street, Stewartstown, Donaghmore Road, Dungannon, and Laurel Drive, Aughnacloy.

A majority of residents will need to be in favour of such signage, for it to be provided.

In the case of Laurel Drive, the residents had an additional hurdle to overcome, as their street had originally been named ‘Laural Drive’, back in September 2000 – an unfortunate typo which was eventually fixed last February, bringing to an end 24 years of confusion for delivery drivers, and much relief for the residents when seeking to obtain insurance.

However, as residents had to be surveyed a first time on the change of spelling from ‘Laural’ to ‘Laurel’, they experienced some delay in having their request for bilingual signage progressed in the form of a new survey.
