TD celebrates her Tyrone roots at special event in Dublin

A TD has celebrated her Tyrone roots at a special event in Dublin.

Emer Currie, who was elected last year to the Dail as a Fine Gael TD for the Dublin West constituency, was a guest speaker at an event hosted last week by the Tyrone Association of Dublin.

During her talk, Emer, who is the daughter of Austin and Annita Currie, spoke about her close ties to Tyrone and how her father had inspired her to follow a career in politics.

Austin Currie, who was Coalisland, was a founding member of the SDLP and, after moving to Co Kildare with his family, was elected to the Dail in 1989. He died in 2021.

Annita Currie, nee Lynch, is originally from Omagh.

A spokesperson for the Tyrone Association of Dublin, which was set up in 1956 to connect people from Tyrone living and working in Dublin, said Emer Currie’s talk had been a ‘resounding success’.

“In an honest and emotional address, Emer shared deeply personal reflections on her upbringing during the Troubles in Northern Ireland,” the spokesperson said.

“She spoke movingly about family life, the challenges they faced, and the profound influence of her inspirational father, Austin Currie—a civil rights leader and founding member of the SDLP.

“Her story resonated deeply with all in attendance, providing a poignant reminder of resilience, legacy, and the importance of continuing dialogue and understanding.”

The association spokesperson said Emer’s mother and brother, Dualta, were also at the event.

“As the evening drew to a close, Annita took to the floor and delivered a beautiful, heartfelt speech.

“She spoke with warmth and emotion about Emer’s journey, her strength, and the joy that she brings to those around her. Her words were filled with pride, love, and admiration.”
