Let’s face it job hunting is never easy, but 2021 has certainly thrown a wrench in to the hiring opportunities and process for recruiters and job seekers alike!
Here are four ways applying and interviewing for jobs have changed in 2021 and what to do about them.
1. Employment gaps aren’t a problem
Many of us now have gaps on our resumes, whether it’s because you lost a job, experienced a health issue or another reason.
In years past this would presented a red flag to potential employers. Yet , today recruiters are less concerned about employment gaps, regardless of when they occurred.
We are all in the same boat. If you have a gap in your résumé, job search experts say that rather than trying to hide it, you should briefly say what happened. Use it as an opportunity to explain how you used that time to build skills applicable to the job.
2. Cover letters are more important than ever
A smart cover letter explains why you are a good fit for the job and more employers are using these to guide their hiring decisions.
While skills and qualifications are important. Chances are you have been out of work or experienced disruption to your normal career and education journey.
Recruiters are aware of this and are interested to see how you have faced stress and upheaval. Your cover letter is the perfect place to address this and show your employer your character.
Before writing a cover letter, research the company you are applying to and tailor your letter to explain why you are the best fit for the job.
A little extra tip? Blend in keywords from the job posting in your cover letter to make it clear that you understand the role and how you meet their criteria.
3. Remote work is here to stay
During the pandemic, many non-essential job roles switched to remote working, at least temporarily. And it looks like that trend is here to stay for many of us.
The good news is that this shift has opened up new opportunities. If you are living right here in Tyrone it’s now possible to work in Belfast, Dublin or Manchester across more roles and industries.
If remote working is part of your prospective role, recruiters will want you to demonstrate that you can be successful and reliable.
Make sure your resume highlights your communication and time-management skills and any previous experience working from home..
You may also want to mention how you are ready to work from home. That you have access to reliable high-speed internet, a suitable workspace and video or audio equipment.
4. Your job interview might well be via video call
Remote work is continuing into 2022 for many businesses. So its a good idea to brush up your video interview skills in preparation.
Interviewing for a job can be stressful, and doing so by video can add a new set of challenges. We love this little YouTube video showing how to look great on video calls from home.
