When it comes to putting on the lippy, for many of us we just grab something that looks fairly nice in a colour and at a price we like.
However, when it comes to your wedding day, sometimes taking a little extra time to consider what type of lipstick you are going to wear can have other benefits than just adding a coat of colour to your lips.
There are various types on the market from moisturising and nourishing to long-lasting, gloss and matte. There’s no right or wrong type, style or colour of lipstick you should be wearing for your wedding day – a lot of it is to do with personal style and choice.
Here are some of the types of lipstick available and their benefits:
1. Gloss
As one of the most popular lipstick choices, gloss tends to be the ‘go-to’ style for most brides due to how easy it is to apply and how it can make the lips shine.
However, gloss lipstick is also known for being able to improve the dimension of depth. It also tends to be favoured by women with thin and small lips because it can help enhance them.
What’s great about gloss lipsticks is that they can be worn alone or over a traditional lipstick to add comfortability and voluptuousness.
For a long-lasting option, go for MAC Cosmetics Lipglass in ‘Chai’ (left) or ‘C-Thru’ (right), £15.50 each.
2. Matte
Believe it or not, with matte lipsticks your lips will look younger and smoother. People who normally choose matte lipsticks are either looking for a more natural feel or a bold, brash statement of vibrant colour.
Matte lipsticks also tend to stay on the lips for longer periods of time, meaning you won’t have to worry about constantly reapplying lipstick on your big day. Just make sure you remember to put lip balm on before to ensure that all-important smoothness.
Urban Decay’s Comfort Matte Vice lipsticks are designed to be one of the most comfortable matte lipsticks on the market. Shades left-right are: ‘1993’ and ‘Doubt’, £15.50 each.
3. Pearl, Frosted & Shimmer
When you use either a pearl or frosted lipstick, it gives the lips the feeling of sparkling and glistening – perfect to wear with a minimalistic wedding dress.
The way it works is that pearl and frosted styles of lipstick reflect light and have an opalescent finish. They make great choices as they always look good under artificial light and can even make your lips appear fuller.
However, due to the compounds used they can cause lips to be dry, risking cracking and in some cases, making them feel heavy. It’s a good idea to moisturise your lips well when using these styles, but for most people, the positives definitely outweigh the negatives.
For a bright and bold option, try MAC Cosmetics’ Frosted Lipstick in ‘Costa Chic’ (right), or for a pearly nude, try shade ‘Spoiled Fabulous’ (left, £16.50 each).
4. Satin & Sheer
The great thing about satin and sheer lipsticks is that they moisturise and nourish the lips, giving them a real shiny and glossy feel.
The positives of these lipsticks is that they give off a beautiful sexy and seductive look and will keep your lips well-moisturised, but be prepared to reapply throughout the day and night, as they don’t tend to stay in place and offer a barely-there coverage. Sometimes it’s good to use them with a base colour.
Colour Pop Cosmetics are renowned for their Ultra Satin Lip liquid lipsticks ‘Magic Wand’ (left) and ‘Echo Park’ (right), $6.
5. Long Lasting & Transfer Resistant
Obviously if it’s your wedding day, you’ll have a pretty busy day ahead – and won’t have time to reapply lipstick or worry about what’s happening on your lips. Therefore, it’s definitely a good idea to invest in a tough, long-lasting/transfer-resistant lipstick. They’re resilient, usually contain moisturiser and tend to be a favourite of women in busy jobs.
Smash Box’s Always On Matte Liquid Lipsticks pride themselves on lasting all day long. Shades below are ‘Baja Bound’ (left) and ‘In Demand’ (right), £19 each.
6. Moisturising
If you have dry lips then it’s a no brainer, you should definitely invest in a moisturising lipstick ahead of your big day. They will help to keep your lips soft and smooth and usually contain ingredients such as aloe, vitamin E and/or glycerine. The lipsticks usually have a nice subtle shine to them giving lips a sensual wet look.
The Body Shop offer great moisturising lipsticks, including their Colour Crush lipsticks which are also full of pigment. Below are ‘Spice Things Up’ (left) and ‘Blushing Pink’ (right), £10 each.
7. Cream
If you have small lips then a cream lipstick is definitely a must to make them look fuller. While cream lipsticks are not shiny in their look, their formula can give a real smooth look and feel to the lips.
It’s a good idea to have some lip gloss on hand in case you want to top-up on moisture or give a shiner feel.
NYX Cosmetics shot to fame with their liquid suede crème lipsticks for their creamy, opaque finish. ‘Soft Spoken’ (left) and ‘Sandstorm’ (right) are their most popular shades, £7.
Top Tips for Lipstick Application:
- Make your lipstick last longer by applying your lipliner as a base before application. If you’re using natural colours you can get a nude liner.
- When it comes to liners, stick to light with light and dark with dark, mixing and matching just doesn’t work.
- If you’re over 50 it’s a good idea to steer clear of gloss and matte, creams work really well for lips that usually need a little more care and attention.
- If you have dry or chapped lips simply gently exfoliate with a damp cloth.
- When applying lipstick, it’s a good idea to use a lipstick brush, it gives you better control, a more even application and a longer lasting result.
