TRIBUTES have been paid following the death of Tony Rafferty, formerly of Aughafad, Fintona, who passed away peacefully in Philadelphia on Saturday, February 28.
Tony, the beloved son of the late Francis and Bridie Rafferty, was the youngest of seven siblings.
He is deeply mourned by his sisters Irene McGinley, Colette Rodgers, Monica McGinn, Frances Kelly and Siobhan, his brother Kieran, as well as his extended family circle and many friends.
Born on September 6, 1967, Tony grew up on the family farm in Aughafad, where he developed the strong work ethic that would stay with him throughout his life.
He spent his early years living and working in Tyrone before emigrating to Philadelphia in 1995, where he would spend the next 31 years building a life and career.
Gentle soul
Family members described Tony as a gentle soul with a quiet personality and a dry sense of humour.
He found happiness in life’s simple pleasures, often listening to world news on his transistor radio and keeping closely connected to events both in Ireland and abroad.
Despite living thousands of miles from home, Tony remained deeply proud of his Irish roots and maintained a strong interest in sport.
He was a devoted supporter of the Philadelphia Eagles and took great pride in seeing the team win Super Bowl LII and Super Bowl LIX.
He also followed Tyrone Gaelic football closely, often knowing the results of matches before family members back home.
Tony was widely-respected in his profession as a skilled stonemason and plasterer, and was known for the quality of his craftsmanship and his dedication to his trade.
Following his passing, Tony was brought home to Fintona for his final farewell.
He reposed at Grianan House Funeral Home before his Requiem Mass took place at St Lawrence’s Church in the Parish of Donacavey on Monday, celebrated by Fr Sean Mulligan.
Symbols
During the service, Kevin, Daniel and Niall brought forward symbols representing Tony’s life, including his transistor radio, a pair of one-arm glasses and his work shorts.
A reflection on his life was also shared by his sister Irene McGinley, who spoke of his dedication to family, work and friendship.
Following the Mass, Tony was laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery in Fintona, returning to the community that remained close to his heart throughout his life.
He is fondly remembered as a devoted brother, uncle, workmate and loyal friend whose quiet kindness left a lasting impression on those who knew him.
