ALAN Nesbitt has returned to the Mountjoy United hotseat for a third time following David Gilfillan’s decision to step down at the end of last season and he’s determined to give youth a chance.
Having managed the Lisnagirr Road side’s first team in 1998 and then again during their time in the NI Intermediate League, Nesbitt returned to the dugout as Gilfillan’s assistant over the past two seasons and he feels having held that role leaves him as the ideal candidate to take charge during the 2020/21 campaign.
“Gilly was going to be a hard act to follow but the way I look at the club at the minute is we’re in transition,” he observed. “Most of our intermediate league team has nearly now all gone, bar a couple, so it’s a rebuilding game now and I know the youth that’s coming through so I thought I’d be ideal for the position to give these young boys a
chance.
“I’ll oversee the transition part of it, give these young lads a chance and I know what we have because I was assistant to Gilly these last two year anyway.
“I thought to myself, instead of someone coming in and we maybe lose a couple of the young lads who might not get a chance, I thought I’d be the most likely candidate and I thought now was the time to come in, help these young lads out and add a few new faces because that’s what probably happened over the last couple of years, we didn’t freshen
things up enough.
“Hopefully I’ll be able to bring in two or three players but we have a good group coming through. Some of them are a wee bit young at 16 or 17, but there’s two or three will definitely feature this season, no doubt.”
